BERSIH | Will it turn Kotor?

They say, Bersih might turn Kotor! That UMNO and BN party members are at their wits to answer citizen discontent over how inadequate governance is on the conduct of general elections in the country. Their knee jerk response so far from all the threats of arrest and bans is nothing less than Kotor!
But, all that we want to do is to create awareness in order to govern ourselves. The Deputy Inspector General of Police last night over RTM 2 gave me the impression, there might really be nasty incidents. You figure!
Our PM must be protected by all means. He should not leave home without his helmet! ;)

Balik Kampung III | When chickens cross the road

I tell you, it's a long time since I heard a rooster crowed at the break of dawn.
There is a lot of argument on the Printing Press laws and the ISA and messages of democratization get waylaid. Big change is happening with DAP. They want to reach out to Malay voters, not to sell them pork which even some or more than some Chinese now don't eat, but to plead on rethinking views about how Malaysia can move on and prosper.
Perhaps the Chinese Press and broadsheets can do national duty by having a Bahasa Malaysia section. When these eventually gets used as grocery wrappers, the kampung folks could at least read them. Of course, among the Chinese Press, some are more Malay than Chinese. But it's really the damn printing press laws that essentially have stiffled community education in what newsprint can do.
Did you hear a rooster crow? I just did. Even in broad light in Kuching City. Must hear another at dawn someday.

Singapore Elections | Balik Kampung II | ...closing in on the spirit

They say you can't take the kampung out of Malaysians. Many Singaporeans think so, too, surely. But old worn shoes could give you a spring in the stride.
In the harsh tones of battle politics of Singapore Elections 2011, the Big Cat meowed. Did Singaporeans accept it? Surely some did and some didn't. But PM Lee apologised after the feminine touch of a young budding female politician.
Despite Big Brother Govenment and Media muzzling of the citizenry, the Singaporean rakyat voices were heard, still stifled, though sanguine.
The voters scalped 3 Ministers and won only 6 places whilst the PAP romped home with 80. Has the PAP read the rakyat? They must have. It will tell in the coming days. It will tell whether the widely acclaimed prowess means more than the accolades repeated elsewhere of Singapore's success. The stories are loud. Malaysians look up to their Singapore neighbor and say they won't bat an eyelid at whatever dissenting things you say about Singapore. If you can't chew gum they say it must be bad for you.
In the excitement, anxiety and great expectations whilst waiting for the elections results, a faint musing voice had murmured.
Maybe the opposition lost. Maybe they might not still be fully heard. But if they can't chew gum, they are going to chew up the PAP Government. Some found what they lost. Many may keep what they might have always regarded theirs.
Kenny Tan's tweet does catch you. He found his kampung spirit ... not quite, but close to it. Would he look for it again? Would other Singaporeans look for it, too? Perhaps not in a wide encompaaing public consensus on how to interprete all that national wealth. It may mean different things to different people. But already, they're telling the "Tua Kampung" PAP. Now, if they can't move it, would they shove it?
But still, it seems old worn shoes walk you better. Not to walk you all over bodies in repose.

Selamat Hari Raya Puasa
For those still on the road, they'll get there safely. Those who won't make it back, the nearest Suara or Masjid should just be round the corner!

All that and all things kampung
Image posted bytsalak | Image hosted by Image.shack on 2008-06-10
The Malaysian Exodus, that crazy time when you scramble for home for Raya, Fatt Choy, Gawai, Thaipusam is encultrated steadfastly into present day urban life. There are estimated to be more than half of the population in cities and towns in Malaysia. If just half of that scrams out, the roads and rivers, and airports, will be crowded by some 7 million people.
Imagine ...all that people!
Each in his head a picture of home, of mom, dad, hugs, kisses and perhaps a little tear or two; genuinely unabated exhiliration---hardly croc tears.
Well, all that and all things kampung.
It's also about business. 14 millions cans of drinks of Coke and Ali Coked drunk. Just about anything else edible munched. Garbage that needs to be disposed. Fuel to feed trains, cars, boats and planes. Bank LCs for the crude oil and gas, la-di-da-di-da!
But no business is good business unless there is decent politics. Each year in the nation's capital there'll be screwups on busing, trains and even planes. You don't hear much about the boat crowds on the rivers. The MSM never thought that important enough, anyway. And of course there'll be wastes---energy, time, money when the system all too often crashes.
The late Sudirman, Malaysia's great performing artist captured some of this in his music in the song Balik Kampung. If you're an artist emneshed in your work, these things are relevant. And Sudirman captured it. He'll be immortal in some ways and with fond memories.
For some, balik kampung is much treasured experience. These are dads, moms, abangs adiks whose work dictates lonliness and separation. For these, it will be time for friendly slaughter. You bring back goodies and presents embellishing love and affection. It will not be conditional. But life's not always all that and uplifting: there'll be debts to pay. For such it'll be like real executions.
But also the heartbreaking sadness, regrets, retributions when you become ayam balik kampung ... into the pot for some!
All that and all things kampung! Where the heart lies.
