Born in the throes of the world depression years of early 1900's Gesang's life had spanned a century. Subsequent financial crashes saw political changes in Indonesia and citizens now show muted strains of vibrance.
He passed away on Thursday 20 May, 2010.
May he rest in peace in Allah's keeping.
It was in the 1940's when as a young man, like many others in Java, their lives wrought in destituton after the depression, Gesang took out his hand carved bamboo flute. He pulled together sounds that brought comfort and hope, about a river in his life - Bengawan Solo. He saw hope in traders plying their goods on the river (Kaum pedagang selalu naik itu perahu). In times of drought he saw farms dried up (Musim kemarau tak berapa airmu). So too, in times of floods he must have seen miseries as water wrought havoc on padi fields and farms on Solo's banks and in the valleys(Di musim hujan air meluap sampai jauh).
Yet he sensed its part in his lives and those of many others, always has been (Sedari dulu jadi perhatian insani).
Indonesia was caught in world geopolitics when Japanese soldiers invaded Indonesia. In the midst of military occupation, the soldiers found time and heard Gesang, liked it, and the war over, they brought it home to be sung in Japanese. It went further. Bengawan Solo was also sung by Chinese, Australians, Dutch and all. Of course, all over Malaysia, we sang it, too. We still do, though in exasperation.
The Japanese came back, erected a statue in his honor and memory. Human cooperation saw technical co-coperation and the Solo River was dammed up, its natural course rerouted: from southward to northward. Floods recurr and you'll read about people affected there, still. That's life playing out then and now.
Sibu people, too, are still affected by floods. They did not put their feelings like anything Gesang did. They articulated their hopes and sent Wong Ho Leng to Parliament.
Well, they could still throw Ho Leng into the river, if he doesn't brush up on his singing prowess in belting out Bengawan Solo! ;)

Indonesian lyrics
Bengawan Solo
Riwayatmu ini
Se dari dulu jadi
Perhatian insani
Musim kemarau
Tak seb'rapa airmu
Di musim hujan, air
Meluap sampai jauh
Chorus: Mata airmu dari Solo
Terkurung Gunung Seribu
Air mengalir sampai jauh
Akhirnya ke laut
Itu perahu
Riwayatmu dulu
Kaum pedagang s'lalu
Naik itu perahu
English translation
Solo River
Thus your chronicles
Have been since earliest time
Of sentient attention
In the dry season
Your water is not much
In the rainy season, water
Spills reaching far distances
Your water springs forth from Solo
Surrounded by a thousand mountains
Water flows to reach far distances
Eventually to the sea
That boat
In your past chronicles
The merchant folks had always
Sailed in such boats
This beautiful song will always remain a favourite...I prefer it with a keronchong beat though.
The new MP Wong must do something to solve the recurring floods here.
Salak, this song was made famous by P.Ramlee as far as I know. Too bad I have never heard of Gesang.
"Bengawan Solo" is an evergreen popular esp in Penang. Soon after P.Ramlee's death, Penang's favourite crooner/entertainer with RTM Zainal Alam was a popular choice at every major social events in the state and he would sing P.Ramlee's hits.
Anonymouse,
Ya what! They could push him into the river! :)
Don't know what he could do about the flooding. Not until PR can govern. He could concentrate on immediate issues and the economy. But right now PR should have management of Sibu City Council with local elections.
The early 1900's by what we read of history was devastating. Paved the way for 2 world wars.
We shouldn't have wars at all now. Not that Malaysia can win any sea battle with submarines that sink themselves. But they're still playing ponzi in the financial world. Now UMNO wants a gaming licence for World Cup!!!
Last night Najib said our GDP for Q1 is 10%. Where did that come from? Home economics? Has Najib learned to cook books? We have suspected all along he was cooking something. What has he got? Bubur Greek? ;)
Jong,
You better suck up to Yen Yen, Minister of Tourism so we can have another war with Indonesia to claim Bengawan Solo is Malaysian! :) Google it, lah!
Curiously though, P Ramlee was from Sumatra, I think. Hey many of us came from either Jawa or Sumatra. One of my grandfathers, maternal side had a name that ends with "...no" ! As in in SukarNO, HartoNO. Gesang's second name has a "...NO" suffix - Gesang Martohartono!
Indonesians, Jong, have rythmn! :) Malaysians are SQUARE! Ain't got no rythmn !!! ;)
Sorry, James Sia of Seremban, performs for the video I've embedded! Guy has got rythmn !!! :)
Yeah I agree with you the Indons are great musicians, they have good rythmn. That reminds me, your hip-swaying favourite gelek queen Inul Daratisa will get Malaysians in a frenzy in Tawau, Keningau next week.
Hmmm, let's see how that disgusting upperty bitch from umno will react to Inul's visit, he may make it look like another field trip to make more deals in east Malaysia once again, no? :D
Why not Kuching? That's unfair, lah!
That's why we can't fit into round holes. We are becoming too square! :(
Like this, ah, we kena "deformasi" instead of "reformasi" ;)
Someone said she gave the Datuk Badminton Champ a hug and the team crashed in Thomas Cup! :) Someone should sack the unlucky "Coach"! ;)
You don't seriously think Sharizat or Sarawak Woman Minister Fatimah are against that, do you?
"...INVESTING IN THE FUTURE – The flood problems in Sarawak needs serious attention while long term investment in human capital and infrastructure is needed to make Sarawak a great economy. WIFI will be provided free to move Sarawak into a knowledge state. ..." - blogKit
Looks like many people heard Gesang, too!
Let's give Keroncong a little "bounce"
Thanks for the many utube version but ai yah, i just had to go through the many versions of this song. Aneke is still great but I still remember those days when Susan of the Cresandos sang..poor girl drowned off the sea in East Coast Trengganu if i am not mistaken.
You're right Anonymouse!
The 60's sounds - There were Naomi, Janice Wee, Rose Iwanaga, The Avengers or something like that!
The radio was just playing Dahlan Zainuddin the other day. He was 70's I think.
These people found their talents in music as Gesang did. In Indonesia you have the numbers but lacking buying power. Malaysians have better buying power but you know how it is - the obstacle is the decadent BN gomen. Someone should sing a song of a typical Malaysian boy Saiful who ended in the PM's Office and preyed upon.
We're spending lots of money on our unemployed kids and keeping them busy and off the streets - look at the Khidmat Nasional or National Service. Then they get preyed on like Saiful! If we could get our economy right and fix education properly, we could get the kids to do other things. Indonesians are doing well in this respect. They have hackers and crackers who could pull down our websites when there's a war on cultural thieving like music and food.
All the money spent don't get into the kids pockets to power music for instance. It goes into the cronies pockets. Najib's cronies get most of the money on National Service.
But Malaysia is a crazy place in this sense, for now. You sell more CDs if you write songs angkat Najib or Mahathir!
Bengawan Solo an evergreen
Wow Salak reminiscing about the 60's, Cresendoes, Naomi and the Boys, Anneke Gronloh, how about Ernie Johan, The Quest and fon't forget the Pop Yeh Yeh groups from Singapore.
Hi Shrek! :)
Some good notes lead you to the kitchen, ah!?
Ernie Johan is still around. Adorable Ernie! Probably in the US. But Gesang stuck to his keroncong. You should try keroncong with a Raegge beat! :))
Salak
Keroncong is Reggae. Love keroncong especially the traditional ones where you can hear the ukelele, and double stop beat.
I believe Ernia Johan is in Indonesia. I've always enjoyed Hetty Koes Endang singing in keroncong beat.
Shrek,
Must be of Portuguese/ Spanish strains. Raggae beat is more accentuated and has "bounce"!
Here's one I ripped off from somewhere and stitched back. You hear the strings there - guitars and ukelele-like! :)
Nice, isn't it.
WOW, those guys are really having great fun in the cool open, huh! This song reminds me of my days in the Convent School choir; we had so much fun with the keroncong beat that our Eurasian music teacher simply loved!
Shrek should listen to the Ukelele Orchestra ! :D
Awesome team, luv it!!
Help Salak, I can only get through the reggae version for a few seconds and am most interested to hear the full song done Bob Marley style!!
Please check n resend me. thanks

It looks like more commissions are going into Najib's cronies pockets. The Trainess will be insured ! It doesn't say what quantum each life would be insured.
The mamakfler said "Politics is $$$$" how true and he led by example, created a generation of greedy corrupt BN politicians! Every decision from the top, every policy made, someone in this corrupt regime gets to gain directly or indirectly.
Just look at Fat Mama, she keeps her interest on Armed forces/NS uniforms and accessories and makes sure the production line keeps churning non-stop - chiak beh liow lo!
Idris Jala just warned Malaysia will go bankrupt in 9 years time, how not to? So let's throw them all out before they sweep clean the nation's coffer!
The trainees will be insured...
ANOTHER CREATIVE WAY TO MILK MORE $$$. The insurers will surely be paying $$commission
to keep PM's bank account healthy!!
Jong, Anonymous,
I'd like to think politics is not solely about "$$$" ! That's simplistic, nevertheless still, a widely held belief among the UMNO/BN few and propagated by Mahathir.
But it is about the "political economy". That is "expansive" not just expensive. Nowadays many seem to wanna think sustainability, which in some indirect way, is Bengawan Solo is singing about. Now we look at rivers in wider context.
Idris Jalla is just that, "jala"! A purposeful and constructive professional don't scare people! Looks like Idris is entangled in his own "jala". It takes a fool not to be able to create the mess, Jala is painting or has already started creating.
Of course, we know for some while Najib is cooking the books and the economy with a lot of help from the "First Lady". He's serving us "bubur" now instead of the customary "rice" you get.
This is great!
