Usman Awang | Kemanusiaan - The Makover

This is my impression or translation of Usman Awang's Poem, "KEMANUSIAAN". It was written in November, 1963 but the principal issue sounds so contemporary, same as often spoken about by Chomsky decades before the millennium in talks and debates around US campuses.

It appears to have been written following former President Kennedy's assasination of November 1963.

Poems of this genre are so rare from the local poets these days, but I must have missed others other than what the recent ones Pak Samad have penned.

The makeover

The leaves and the breeze only fluttered with the banners
as unhearing and mute they knew not nor quivered with news of great import
as desired of petrified people as such great news break

They had seen before how red blood was shed by Adam's sons
in battles waged in victories and defeat
and how deaths were sung all yonder
and lives wagered till all ground turned to graves

how many teardrops for each who had died
before more and more coffins draw more tears
that were they to be compared shame falls of Niagara's
those tears of loved ones and loved sons
of waiting girls and grieving mothers.

If you regret a single death
but in phony sympathy shed not a tear for others
then humanity crowns not in the face of truth
for is it humanity if it is not boundless?

Now as each City all over weeps and cries out its grief
as should humanity throb and feel
not a soul will cry for future fatality
or would say: let us snuff out enmity
for those who have loved and lost, weep
the world is a makeover: life is a bleeding death

Translated from:
"KEMANUSIAAN, (Kematian Kennedy)", Usman Awang, "DURI DAN API"
Kuala Lumpur, November, 1963

The original version goes as:

Jika menyesali kematian seorang

IN THE RAW | Excesses of Malaysian Government, Home Minister and Police

14-year old Aminulrasyid

"The Government, Home Ministry and IGP must tender a public apology to the family of Aminulrasyid on the false allegations made against Aminulrasyid and his family after his death," the statement added.

It also recalled that Aminulrasyid's friend Azamuddin Omar, who was at the scene, had lodged a report that police had attempted to murder him during the incident.

"No action has been taken against any police officer on Azammudin's report," the statement added.

In the incident which shocked Malaysians, Aminulrasyid was shot at the back of his head by police while he and a friend were traveling in a Proton Iswara. The police later claimed he was involved in armed robbery, drawing angry reactions from family and friends.

In his report, Azamuddin who was with him in the car said they were chased by a team of policemen in an MPV as soon as they overtook them. One of the policemen then kicked and punched him when he got out to surrender, before he escaped and went home.

NFC - CORRUPTION | Cow case in Court !

Criminal charges negate BAFIA shield, Rafizi trial told

KUALA LUMPUR: An individual automatically loses his right to banking confidentiality once he is charged with committing a criminal offence, a Shah Alam High Court hearing Rafizi Ramli’s application to strike out charges against him for his National Feedlot Centre (NFC) scandal exposes was told today.

Rafizi’s lawyer, R. Sivarasa, when submitting for his client in court here, agreed that while a person’s banking information should remain confidential under the Banking and Financial Institutions Act (BAFIA), the protection does not come without exceptions.

“[Admittedly], an individual’s banking information is secret. But if this person faces charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) or a crime, this right to secrecy is immediately taken away,” he told High Court Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha.

Rafizi, PKR’s strategy director, was charged under Section 97(1) of the BAFIA, for allegedly disclosing four customer account profiles detailing the balance summary for National Feedlot Corporation (NFCorp), the National Meat and Livestock Sdn Bhd, Agroscience and Industries Sdn Bhd, and NFCorp chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Salleh Ismail, to two individuals identified as Yusuf Abdul Alim and Erle Martin Carvalho.

Under Section 103(1)(a) of the same law, he may be fined a maximum of RM3 million and jailed up to three years if found guilty, which could seriously hobble Rafizi’s chances of standing as a candidate in the 13th general election that must be held by April next year when the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition’s mandate expires.

Former Public Bank clerk Johari Mohamad was also charged on August 1 with abetting Rafizi in disclosing the account profiles for the same four customers, under Section 112(1)(a) of the BAFIA, read together with Section 91(1) of the same law that deals with confidential banking information.

He faces the same sentence as Rafizi if convicted.

But when arguing for Rafizi today, Sivarasa reasoned with the court that the former had only exposed the information for the sake of public good.

He insisted that the NFC exposés, which has stayed in the media’s spotlight for about a year now, were a part of the PKR leader’s responsibility to Malaysians.

“Furthermore, the complaint using BAFIA was not made by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) or Public Bank but by the individual himself (Mohamad Salleh), who is currently facing criminal charges in court,” Sivarasa pointed out.

He told the court that his checks with BNM have found that no one has ever been charged with exposing banking information since the BAFIA was enacted in 1989.

This, added the lawyer and Subang MP, was proof that the charges against Rafizi were merely selective prosecution.

Sivarasa also suggested to the court that Rafizi’s actions be recognised and appreciated as a good deed, instead of one that warrants charges under the BAFIA.

He said the NFC exposés had shown blatant abuse of public monies, adding that if the revelations were made abroad, Rafizi would have been revered as a hero as his work had successfully seen Mohamad Salleh hauled to court.

“But instead, he gets charged. If this continues, what would the people’s perception be in the future,” he said. + [ November 19, 2012 | Md Izwan, TMI ]

Truly '1Malaysia' | Love is in the air & all around

Rais said religion instructs that “any debt has to be [repaid]

YAN, Oct 29 — Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government loves the people and it is not wrong to return it to power.

He said it was because of this love for the people that the BN government always provided various kinds of aid and continuous contributions to the rakyat.

“If we are to list the party’s deeds, it’s too long... the opposition has to give political excuses merely to refute all the deeds and promises made by the BN government which have always been fulfilled.

“I’m grateful that the rakyat accepts every aid programme positively and rejects the talks from the opposition which only knows how to make promises,” he said when launching the “Himpunan Kasih Sayang Komuniti 1 Malaysia” (1 Malaysia Community’s Love Gathering) at the Kedah state level, here today.

Kedah Umno liaison chairman Datuk Paduka Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah and secretary-general of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture, Datuk Kamaruddin Siaraf and Jerai Umno division head, Datuk Shuhaimi Abdullah were among the almost 3,000 people who were present. Rais said the 2013 budget tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on September 28 clearly showed that the government gave priority to the welfare of the people and students.

“Religion teaches us to be good and sincere human beings with integrity. So, if we have any debt, it has to be paid. The government, however, has given much concession,” he said, describing as inappropriate the promise made by the opposition to write off the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans if it were to win the 13th general election. He said that in the Jerai parliamentary constituency alone, 21,789 people had received the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) totalling RM10,894,500 while the RM100 aid for students had benefitted 27,892 students involving alost RM2.8 million.

A total of 445 fishermen received the cost of living allowance of RM200 amounting to RM89,000 each month while 1,364 fishermen received the diesel subsidy, he added.

Rais later gave away five wheelchairs, five hampers, and a contribution of RM1,000 to three newly-wed couples comprising a Malay couple, a Chinese as well as an Indian couple.

Meanwhile in Guar Chempedak, near here, three newly-wed couples who were feted at the gathering described the celebration as a very happy occasion with the presence of the information, communications and culture minister together with almost 3,000 guests at the Guar Chempedak Multipurpose Hall.

The three couples did not expect that the small wedding reception they had planned earlier had become such an elaborate gathering with the presence of the various races.

Fadzilah Md Saad, 32, and husband Azizi Yusuf, 31, Joane Chong Khai Juen, 22, and Lim Cin Keak, 22, from Gurun and G. Punisha, 23, and husband M. Shankaran, 24, from Bedong were very happy when met at the reception.

The couples said they were shocked when they were told that their wedding reception would be sponsored. — Bernama | The Malaysian Insider

WWII forced labor paid compensation | Where's the money?

What could you do with RM207 billions? I could do a lot with just RM40 millions, thank you. Probably win the next GE13 for Sabah. That amount could pay for 12 months of the Government of Malaysia's expenditure. The figure of RM251 for Budget 2013 would probably has lots of padding for BN's nonsense and waste.

Would you steal from the Rakyat, dead or living? Some 30,000 were enslaved by the Japs in World War II and that money of RM207 billions was some means of assuaging their conscience and ours. But, Malaysian government ministers and public servants with their grubby crooked fingers have made the money vanished. It left some traces of its disappearance and a Pakatan member of Parliament is demanding answers!

Forced labor: Did RM207 billion compensation money disappear?

Harakahdaily | October 22, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR: The BN government is called upon to explain where the money worth RM207 billion that was given by the Japanese government as compensation to 30,000 forced laborers railway construction from 1942 to 1946 has gone to.

Until now it has not been rightfully handed over to the victims or their heirs although it was received 10 years ago.

Member of Parliament for Bukit Gantang, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nizar Jamaluddin told the House of Representatives, he has documents confirming its receipt by the Government

Shocked he said, on December 13, 2004, the Central Bank issued banker's checks worth RM107 billion and RM100 billion allocated in the form of registered shares of Maybank on 13 December 2004.

This is further evidence that the RM207 billion compensation money for 30,000 victims of forced labor was duly received by the government prior to December 13, 2004 again about 10 years ago.

But until now, the money is not given to the victims or their heirs.

As a result, said Mohamad Nizar, former Chief Minister of Perak, the Association of Former Welfare and Labor Heritage Railway Construction Siam to Burma 1942 - 1946 (Persatuan Kebajikan Bekas dan Warisan Buruh Binaan Landasan Keretapi Siam ke Burma 1942 - 1946) had sent a letter to the government of Malaysia to claim the money.

The letter had been sent to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak on July 27, 2011 demanding due payment of the money.

"A total of 30.000 Malaysians were involved in the construction of the railway, 60% of whom were Malays, 20% Indians and 15% Chinese. The remaining 5% were of other races. "

According to Nizar, the Prime Minister's Office upon receipt of the letter handed a copy for submission to the Ministry of Human Resources there Aug. 9, 2011.

He also understands that all parties in the government, including the Department of the Attorney General has agreed that the money should be transmitted to the 30,000 victims or their heirs.

"I wish to state here that if the matter was presented and approved by the Cabinet, then why it should be kept by the Treasury or Finance Treasurer for so long?" Nizar questioned in his speech in Parliament.

He said some of those involved have died, but their heirs are still there.

"The father of Tan Sri Datuk Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, Chief Judge of Malaya today was one of those who were mobilized by the Japanese government at the time to build the railways. And he is still alive."

"He is still in Ipoh and can describe how terrible it was for the 30.000 Malaysians," Nizar told Parliament.

Nizar added, "If compensation has been duly made, why is the government still keeping silent over the matter?"

For him, this is a solemn duty of trust, breached by namely the Ministry of Finance, Bank Negara, Ministry of Human Resources despite the clear instructions from the Prime Minister's Office that the Cabinet approve its disbursement.

"So I want an affirmation that there is an appeal from the association. They have asked that compensation be rightfully given. Why has it been denied?" he demanded.

He added that the governments of the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam had also received similar compensation and which were dutifully paid out to the rightful receipients.

Penang to Sabah : More change in the making

Pitas, Sabah - Pastor Ontu, Melvin and Ondon

Being substantially a Muslim country and upheaving to the crest of political change, Malaysia is making waves in inter-faith relations.

Last few weeks, a component of the PR, PAS the Islamic Party members quietly but publicly took a bold step with a courtesy call when Sebastian Francis, became Bishop of the Penang Catholic Diocese . True to their call for political reforms and ethnic and religious understanding, PAS is making gestures at this early stage for reapproachment for socio-cultural appreciation.

On the heels of the Penang visit, a more positive event developed in Sabah where household incomes and illegal immigrants voting plague the political debate. A Christian Pastor, Otou @ Francis Singoron is set to move and work for the PAS candidate potential Puan Dausieh Queck for a challenge in the forthcoming GE 13, to be held any time between December and April 2013. He has canvassed around him helpers, Christians and surely others too in the locality of Pitas, Sabah to clinch a seat for PAS.

Sabah being dubbed as the poorest State of Malaysia with average bumiputera household income at RM2,800 (National avg RM4,025) is stirred and in debates for its future in greater justice and fairness and fundamental rights.

And it seems from Penang to Sabah, the debate is no longer skewed to narrow ethnic superiority or heritage. Its about life and living now and, here or thereafter.

As should be expected this is not without some hiccup as an committee outed senior PAS leader, Nasharuddin, chipped in with an outrageous accusation that DAP, PAS' own counterpart in the PR Coalition, had prayed in communion publicly for Malaysia to be a Christian country. The accusation speaks more of the accuser than the accused.

Malaysian Muslims should flatter themselves on this overal latest development. They are said to rise to the clamor that man should face life as if they would live forever and prepare for the thereafter as if death comes on the morrow. Enculturating though rhetorical but more lively and reasonable than the spunk churned out by Utusan and NST, the Spittoon Times.

Longevity? | Possible with a "good" Education System

Pix extract from | EconomyWatch.com

Who would believe that a long life can be obtained with just praying daily, eating long noodles and pausing a while before you leave the house when you hear a bad bird call?

Muhyiddin Yassin, Education Minister might with his new BluePrint.

There are enough things to kill us all we'd freeze to death just figuring out all the options. The trouble is, leave it to people like Muhyiddin and Najib, the Malays especially and all else on two legs will have higher mortality with that dumb BluePrint. In any case, sometime ago Mudhyiddin killed a part of education when he screwed up on the Stamford scam.. But he had the Johore State bail him out under some pretext.

But having a good education for the nation is one thing. To complement what a decent education system or philosphy is another. The simple answer is tiresome to repeat but its really and simply, good governance!

BN Proposal for reforms in Education

Prime Mininster Najib appears to present this as the "BLUEPRINT". It's yet to be published for public viewing. There'll be many pages ...more by the sound of it as they want much more money. In any case, you'd think we should have an omnobus of some kind for something as substantial as Education which should be the oversight body for something as Education before being finally debated in Parliament.

If you take pot shots at a few point of the principal clause leadership seems to be a big thing with BN. Why do all students need to be taught as Leaders? We want wholesome citizens who will need to be everything else in society. And national identity? Sounds like an UMNO Brigade Training Program.

If you look at the Third Wave it suggests giving "autonomy" to handle their own administration. This is an indecent statement surely to some good headmasters or principals now currently slogging it out in the ULU.

We'll probably hear lots more and pick them out for scrutiny. Many are going to tear this apart.

It sounds like an election gimmick.

National Education Blueprint: Key points

KUALA LUMPUR Tuesday September 11: The highly-anticipated National Education Blueprint (2013-2025), which was launched on Tuesday, outlines 11 shifts required to transform the national education system to be on par with and comparable to that of developed nations, over the next 13 years.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in unveiling the blueprint, said the transformation would be carried out in three “waves”.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak later officially launched the blueprint.

Najib accompanied by Muhyiddin arriving at launch of the NEB Najib accompanied by Muhyiddin arriving at launch of the NEB

As part of the blueprint, the Education Ministry will conduct comprehensive “stock-takes” in 2015, 2020 and 2025, in which all stakeholders will be able to provide input.

An annual report on the progress will also be published.

These are the key points of the National Education Blueprint:

  • Blueprint focuses on six student attributes - Knowledge, Thinking Skills, Leadership, Bilingual Proficiency, Ethics and National Identity
  • To achieve desired student outcomes, reform of education system to be approached in 11 shifts
    • Shift 1: Provide equal access to quality education of an international standard. Initiatives under Shift 1 - revised curriculum for schools in 2017 and option for high achieving students to finish school earlier.
    • Shift 2. Ensure every child is proficient in Bahasa Malaysia and English language. Under Shift 2, 70,000 English teachers to sit for Cambridge Placement Test and be given training to improve language proficiency.
    • Standard Bahasa Malaysia curriculum for all both government and vernacular primary schools - goal to abolish 'remove' class in secondary schools by 2017
    • Shift 3: Develop values-driven Malaysians - plans of expanding the Student Integration Plan for Unity (RIMUP) programme for students
    • Shift 4: Transform teaching into profession of choice. Only top 30% of graduates will be recruited for teaching. Also new career package and reduced administrative duties for teachers.
    • Shift 5: Ensure high-performing school leaders in every school
    • Shift 6: Empower state and district Education Departments and schools to customise solutions based on need - they can tailor their approach for different schools.
    • Shift 7: Leverage ICT to scale up quality learning across Malaysia. Ministry to expand 1Bestari (Wifi) to all schools.
    • Shift 8: Transform Education Ministry delivery capabilities and capacity so that there is no overlap of function and more streamlined.
    • Shift 9: Partner with parents, community and private sector at scale. Parents will be able to monitor student progress online through School Examination Analysis System (SAPS) system. Five hundred trust schools to be set up
    • Shift 10: Maximise student outcomes for every ringgit. To ensure "outcome-based budgeting" with government spending on education
    • Shift 11: Increase transparency for direct public accountability. Blueprint and progress of its goals will be made public

  • First wave: Blueprint implementation, there will be more support for teachers and focus on core student skills
  • Second wave: Build upon progress.
  • Third wave: From 2020 - 2025, schools will have autonomy to handle their own administration

55 MERDEKA | Recalling History 10 years before Merdeka

The stories told here in the video don't sound so old, so distant in the past as some of the participants tell their stories.

There was mention of the People's Constitution. It'd be interesting to get our hands on it. Looks like we'll have to scour the Net to get a copy somewhere.

Their stories should be told again and over so our kids and grandkids really know what had happened.

History having made us what we are today, what will you make for those Malaysians who'll come after?

55 MERDEKA | 'Lembu punya susu, sapi dapat nama'

CAN UMNO’s claim that they fought for the country’s independence stand the test of time? The veracity of this claim is now shrouded with doubt. A book in bahasa, entitled Anak Merdeka, written by Haji Salleh Majid and published in 1991, exposed the fallacy of this claim. The author was no politician but an ordinary man who lived to witness the political development of this country evolving from the 1940s to the day of Merdeka.

Early attempts to gain independence

Early attempts to achieve independence were mostly unrecorded. For example, in the early 1940s and before the Japanese occupation of Malaya, Ishak Haji Mohammed (commonly known as Pak Sako), together with an Indonesian delegation, surreptitiously went to Japan soliciting Japanese help to fight for the independence of their respective countries. This was followed by Soekarno meeting Dr Burhanuddin Al-Helmy (Pix: Dr Burhanuddin, bottom right) to plan strategies for both countries’ independence. Though both attempts failed for various reasons, the seeds of independence had been sowed long before the existence of UMNO.

Ishak Haji Mohamad’s secret trip to Japan was risky business, inviting prosecution for treason, punishable by death, but such was the dexterity of this pure nationalist. Though he was in the colonial civil service at that time, his patriotism and love for the country was never sacrificed to the colonial masters he served. In fact it was while in Japan that the name Sako was begotten. The Japanese found it difficult to spell and pronounce his name Ishak, so they called him Isako. Later it became his pen name, Pak Sako.

Indonesia’s independence

The independence of Indonesia on 17 August 1945 triggered fire in the hearts of Malays of Indonesian descent. After all, Indonesia was the “motherland”, separated only by the narrow Straits of Malacca. Both were Malay lands; and if one could gain independence, why not the other? Furthermore, an independent Indonesia could provide moral and material help to Malays in the struggle for independence. Thus, begun the dawn of Merdeka.

Formation of PKMM

It was not until early 1946 that Malaya’s first independent movement was formed. It was a political party called Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM). Its founder members were Malays of Indonesian descent, notable among them were Ahmad Boestamam and Musa Ahmad. The party published its first newspaper called Suara Rakayt at Hale Street, Ipoh. The contents were one hundred per cent political. In no time, PKMM opened branches all over the country with its headquarters at 2 Batu Road (now Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman) Kuala Lumpur. It did not take long for Pak Sako and Dr Burhanuddin Al-Helmy to join the party.

“Merdeka!” was the greeting of party members whenever they met. It was said in a spirited voice with clenched fist brought to the chest. Anytime and anywhere they met, the greeting was “Merdeka!”

Formation of UMNO

The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) was formed in June 1946, six months after the formation of PKMM. It was established with the sole objective of opposing the proposed Malayan Union which relegated the powers of the Malayan Rulers to the British Residents. UMNO was not an independence movement. In fact, it vehemently opposed independence as the leaders were mostly colonial civil servants who had sold their lives and soul to their colonial masters. Not only was UMNO opposed to independence, the word “Merdeka”was taboo to them. UMNO’s greeting was “hidup Melayu!”

The other reason UMNO opposed independence was that the Malays were poor and uneducated; left to themselves, Malaya would be a failed state.

The PKMM, on the other hand, thought otherwise. The party wanted independence first; then there would be ample opportunity to educate the Malays as the country was rich in natural resources, and it would not be a failed state. These opposing positions divided the two parties and led to enmity.

PKMM and the labour movement

Enhanced by its committed leaders, the PKMM was a symbol of solidarity. The spirit within party members raged like wildfire. Branches and bureaus were established. Apart from the youth and women’s wings, labour, agriculture and religious bureaus were established. The labour bureau was the most active and most successful political agitator. Through it, the PKMM penetrated the Malayan labour movement, which was very responsive to the former’s presence as the living conditions of the labourers at that time were deplorable. In fact, the presence of the PKMM was welcomed and long awaited.

Incidentally, the Malayan labour movement had affiliated itself with the world labour movement, the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU), whose headquarters was in Paris, and not with the American-controlled International Labour Organisation (ILO), whose headquarters was in New York. The WFTU was leftist inclined, and with the Malayan labour movement affiliated to it, the PKMM’s penetration into the movement heightened British suspicion of the party.

Organised strikes

Between 1946-1948, the labour movement was so active (except in Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah) that intermitternt strikes almost crippled the rubber and tin industries. The port workers of Singapore too joined in the strikes, crippling Malaya’s major port.

As expected, the British operative policy of divide and rule was immediately put into action. While pretending to acknowledge the labourers’ plight, the PKMM was declared illegal and its leaders incarcerated.

The organised strikes did not ease with the banning of the PKMM. Day by day, British economic interests were in jeopardy. The rubber and tin industries, the mainstay of the British economy, faced imminent paralysis. By this time the colonial government had sent a loud and clear message to Whitehall. By this time, Whitehall realised that the independence of India and Indonesia had given impetus to Malaya to free itself from the shackles of colonial rule. This aspiration could no longer be contained and sooner or later Malaya had to be given its independence.

Independence on a silver platter

The British had learnt that independence achieved through war not only resulted in the loss of life and property, but left a grudge within the beneficiary state, resulting in the nationalisation of the colonialists’ assets. This meant the British could lose everything. So the only option was for a negotiated independence. The question then was who would be the British protege so that their assets would be fully protected and the expatriates could hold on to their jobs a little longer.

With PKMM banned and its leaders incarcerated, the only organised movement that dominated the political scene then was UMNO, which was seen as a safe bet. Firstly, most of their leaders were British educated and had embraced British culture and values ever since their high school days in Britain or at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar. Secondly, they were mostly the sons of the Malay rulers and chieftains who had been close to the British. These people had regarded the British as their icons and mentors and viewed them as their savoir.

UMNO, the opportunist

UMNO was quick to seize the opportunity. With its adversary, the PKMM banned and driven into oblivion, UMNO took over where the PKMM had left off. From an anti-Malayan Union organi-sation, it suddenly assumed the role of a force fighting for independence. The British were very comfortable with UMNO’s new role, and negotiations for independence took off.

The negotiations that followed were mainly technical and focussed on two major issues: to prepare the country’s constitution and to agree on the date of the declaration of independence. A body was formed, headed by Lord Reid, to look into a constitution and the date of independence was agreed as 31 August 1957. For political exigency, UMNO would have to forge an alliance with the ethnic Chinese and Indian political parties, and hence “Perikatan” (Alliance) was formed.

Pending full independence, Malaya was ruled by the Federal Legislative Council consisting of appointed members representing the various races and professions. With independence granted on a silver platter, the British were successful in retaining the entire system and had their assets protected. For UMNO and the Alliance, the declaration of independence was a jubilant moment as it was achieved without shedding a drop of blood.

Declaration of independence

On 31 August 1957, Malaya was re-reborn. As the clock struck midnight, the Union Jack was lowered and the new Malayan flag was hoisted in front of the clock tower opposite the Selangor Padang. The shouts of “Merdeka!” — no less than seven times — reverberated and resounded in the air. The shouts were led by Tuanku Abdul Rahman, who stood on a rostrum surrounded by his Cabinet Ministers, some of whom, I observed, were obviously drunk.

The official declaration of independence was held at Stadium Merdeka the next morning, attended by all the Malay Rulers, the British High Commissioner and the representatives of the Queen (Duke of Gloucester). I was there with my father and sibling “representing” Temerloh, Pahang.

Thus, Malaya was born as an independent state, a member of the British Commonwealth and member of the United Nations. It was the culmination of a long and difficult struggle, an achievement won not by the educated class, but by labourers, port workers and others — the downtrodden — whose existence we hardly knew.

They were the real fighters of Merdeka, whose actions created a landscape for independence. Those were the people who laboured endlessly to enrich the colonial masters in return for a pittance and who now lay in the graves unknown and forgotten.

They were Malays, Indians, Chinese and others and they were certainly not UMNO members. They were the unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives and freedom for future generations, but who only found their own freedom in the silence of their graves. It is those people who deserve to be commemorated on 31 August every year and not “the patriots” who hoisted the jalur gemilang on the roofs of mansions at the prestigious addresses of Kuala Lumpur or those who flew the jalur gemilang on the roofs of their flashy cars.

To the real patriots and the fighters of independence, we offer them our unreserved salute. As for UMNO, we only have this to say: “Lembu punya susu, sapi dapat nama.”

Is that a true reflection of the crime situation? The answer is certainly a big ‘NO’,” wrote the ‘policeman'."

Sarawak Health & Education | Public ignorant

It's tough for the BN Government. They're working very hard for the rakyat.

So hard public health and or education has been jeopardised.

It hasn't got any nearer to Sarawak Health Department Directors Office.

If only we knew more. If we really did, we might not need a health department director.

On second thoughts, we could get help from the Immigration Dept and the PDRM!

Sarawak health director blames parents’ ignorance for HFMD spread

August 18, 2012

KUCHING, Aug 18 — Lack of awareness among parents has been identified as a factor contributing to poor control of the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), said Sarawak Health Department director Dr Zulkifli Jantan.

He urged parents not to send their children who displayed HFMD symptoms to school or take them to crowded areas, and seek medical attention early.

Schools, on the other hand, should continue the daily screening of children upon arrival and refer those afflicted with HFMD for further assessment by medical practitioners.

“Generally, the number of cases reported in Sarawak during the past week (from August 12-17) has decreased by 32 per cent and remains below the outbreak and warning levels, with no closure order being served on any institution,” he said in a statement here today, on the weekly HFMD updates in the state.

Dr Zulkifli said that as of yesterday, the number of new cases reported was 138, as compared to 203 in the previous week, with 26 admissions reported, mostly from Sibu, Miri and Kuching.

So far, the cumulative number of cases reported was 10,794, including 1,048 admissions throughout the state. — Bernama

Malaysia muzzled via repressive Internet Laws

If you have an internet address, write blogs or have a page where there is dialogue on open subjects you're liable for the opinions expressed via restrictions and amendments made on Act 150 and/or Amendment 114A on activity on the web.

Simply put, Malaysian Authorities presume you are guilty unless you can prove otherwise as against legal conventional notions that you are innocent UNLESS proven guilty.

A Tan Sri leads Degrees Dummies

“The degrees are not recognised by the government and invalid. Those involved in buying fake degrees must come forward voluntarily,” he told a press conference at Selangor police headquarters, here today.

On July 16, a local newspaper exposed the sale of fake degrees by an education institute in Subang Jaya. which claimed to work with three foreign universities as partners.

The education institute was said to have sold Bachelor’s degrees for RM6,500 each, while Master’s and doctorates went for RM8,500 and RM10,500, respectively.

Some 525 people including VIPs were believed to have “graduated” and received fake degrees without attending lectures, sitting for examination and submitting papers.

Something is very wrong and rotten in the State of Denmark!

We have 2 phallic symbols that greet the sunrise. The country has lost more than RM1.08 trillions and we didn't hear about it till quite recently or some 20 months ago. A Prime Minister and a Chief Minister who do a lot of bizness and Senior Special Branch Police Officer who talked like a pig! He's not a very big pig. The bigger one is the Secretary to the Federal Goverment of Malaysia. He's a Phd of some sort and he waxed with unbounded imagination.

Can you beat that?

Here's more - the 2012 Merdeka Day logo is a sick joke and the signature tune for the celebration is thought to be a rip off!

Rais Yatem, Minister in charge of MCMC, bravely says, "...everything can look bad if the mind is closed."

That's true but no two different pieces of music are alike. But it's hard to tell the difference for Merdeka Day revellers.

All that Rais wants to do is keep people from talking about the George Kent Scandal that PM Najib is involved in!

Malaysia Corruption | Get Gani

Probe A-G before government integrity harmed further, says ex-cop

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 ― The police must investigate Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail for power abuse in light of a new book accusing the Attorney-General of being a fraud, a cheat and a criminal, and show the same diligence with which they probed a sensational 1998 book on why Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim could not be prime minister, a former senior policeman said today.

Retired criminal investigation chief Datuk Mat Zain Ibrahim told Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Ismail Omar that the men in blue must probe the government’s top lawyer due to the increasing public pressure and scrutiny, which he suggested could irrevocably damage public trust in government institutions.

“We have seen and are fed up of trickery and Gani Patail’s lies in handling the RCI’s on the black-eye incident, VK Lingam, and most clearly in the Teoh Beng Hock RCI,” he said in an open letter to the IGP.

Abdul Gani, who has extensive authority over the country’s legal affairs, has been repeatedly accused of fabricating evidence in the 1999 sodomy and corruption trial of Anwar, a deputy prime minister-turned-opposition leader, by Mat Zain whose open letters to the authorities were among the sources of Zainal Abidin Ahmad’s book.

Mat Zain had written to the IGP following the recent publication of a book titled “Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail: Pemalsu, Penipu, Penjenayah? (Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail: Fraud, Cheat, Criminal?)” written by Zainal.

He noted that a leading public figure, businessman Tan Sri Robert Phang who was also a former advisor to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, had filed a police report against Abdul Gani two days ago, based on the contents of the book.

“I got to know that several people who have scrutinised Zainal’s book on Gani Patail, hope the police will investigate the contents as the police diligently investigated the book ‘50 Dalil’ related to Anwar Ibrahim,”

The ex-police officer was referring to a controversial 1998 book, “50 Reasons Why Anwar Cannot Become Prime Minister” written by Khalid Jafri, an ex-editor of the Umno-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia, which alleged that the then-deputy PM was gay in a Muslim-dominated country that criminalises sodomy.

Today, Mat Zain said Abdul Gani’s high-ranking position as the public prosecutor did not indemnify his past actions or make him immune to prosecution as all citizens are equal before the law.

He highlighted as an example minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz’s reply to Parliament on March 30 last year that the A-G does not have the power to “indemnify” anyone from crime based on political considerations.

Mat Zain added that the author could not prove his allegations about Abdul Gani’s wrongdoings on his own.

“However, I can, I am willing and ready to prove the allegations against Gani Patail and Musa Hassan, especially related to the forgery and cheating in the black eye incident that is still being debated to today,” the ex-CID chief said in the letter.

He was referring to the 13-year-long scandal alleging both the A-G and then-IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan, of fabricating evidence to cover up Anwar’s bruised face after being beaten up while under police custody.

Mat Zain said there were many outstanding questions that Abdul Gani and the authorities have yet to answer.

He said Nazri, a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and the de facto law minister, has pledged to look into the mystery of RM40 million worth of assets belonging to former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik (RTC), that had been acknowledged previously by Abdul Gani and anti-graft officials.

“If it has been returned to RTC, what is the Attorney-General’s power to do so when the assets were confirmed obtained by corruption and power abuse?” Mat Zain asked.

The ex-policeman appeared to suggest ....Read the rest ...

Ramadan in China | Mixed messages

China curbs Ramadan fasting in Xinjiang

Al Jazeera, 02 August 2012

XINJIANG, Aug 2: Chinese authorities in the northwestern province of Xinjiang have banned Muslim officials and students from fasting during the month of Ramadan, prompting an exiled rights group to warn of new violence.

Guidance posted on numerous government websites called on Communist Party leaders to restrict Muslim religious activities during the holy month, including fasting and visiting mosques.

Xinjiang is home to about nine million Uighurs, largely a Muslim ethnic minority, many of whom accuse China's leaders of religious and political persecution.

The region has been rocked by repeated outbreaks of ethnic violence, but China denies claims of repression and relies on tens of thousands of Uighur officials to help it govern the province.

A statement from Zonglang township in Xinjiang's Kashgar district said that "the county committee has issued comprehensive policies on maintaining social stability during the Ramadan period.

"It is forbidden for Communist Party cadres, civil officials (including those who have retired) and students to participate in Ramadan religious activities."

The statement, posted on the Xinjiang government website, urged party leaders to bring "gifts" of food to local village leaders to ensure that they were eating during Ramadan.

Similar orders on curbing Ramadan activities were posted on other local government websites, with the educational bureau of Wensu county urging schools to ensure that students do not enter mosques during Ramadan.

'Administrative methods'

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and strive to be more closer to God, pious and charitable.

An exiled rights group, the World Uyghur Congress, warned the policy would force "the Uighur people to resist [Chinese rule] even further."

"By banning fasting during Ramadan, China is using administrative methods to force the Uighur people to eat in an effort to break the fasting," said group spokesman Dilshat Rexit in a statement.

Xinjiang saw its worst ethnic violence in recent times in July, 2009, when Uighurs attacked members of the nation's dominant Han ethnic group in the city of Urumqi, sparking clashes in which 200 people from both sides died, according to the government.

Ramadan Thots | II - Is it Wrong to be Happy?

Malaysians are nice good people. And like all good people, they have had their share of the ups and downs of the grind.

now, grim prospects cast dark clouds in the distant horizon - economic life is in the doldrums with national and household debts poking holes in the roof. Not all, but there are sections of the citizenry who might need more than hunger to shake and rattle them to squarely look at the reality - our country is mismanaged: has been and still is.

No butt rocking will make the problems go away. No inquistion of the once nascent dissent that now has taken many forms, some of which have been night vigils, peace walks and sit and protest, will blot out the nastiness of mistaken beliefs.

Ramadan should make us steadfast in certain things: the search and pursuit for a better life, the endless unfairness that need to be ceased and the nurturing spirit that strives to enrich the human spirit.

Question! Should we stay HUNGRY and revel in it? Or should we lift some forgotten element that's been eating away our innards? If it was there God given, should we diminish virtues and continue in denial? There are universal platforms for different realms of enlightenment and spiritualism. There are action oriented global causes to weed out poverty and hunger

Lying in Ramadan | PM Najib is so predictable

"...In a statement issued through national news agency Bernama, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, had consented to revoking the appointment of Lajim (picture) as deputy housing and local government minister..." - The Malaysian Insider

Why would the Agong have to sack a non-cabinet member he didn't appoint? Deputy Ministers are not Cabinet Ministers. Members of any new government have to take their oaths but the CJ is there to witness, plus some other guys! It's a complete monotony this oath taking is. But it has to be done. If I were the Agong, I would sack PM Najib for disaffecting my dignity and more so might have made me break my fast!

Ramadan Thots | Is it wrong to be happy?

1Malayisa is a dreamland, a Disneyland and a circus of sorts.

Trouble is Malaysians are awake, it's not fun and the elephants are white.

It's not clear what Malaysians think and feel about the Harmony Act. It's like a Happiness Law. You know, it sounds like you might get locked up for being under distress, miserable or unhappy.

But Malaysians are locked-up, unhappy and soon Muslims have to fast for Ramadan with the average Malaysian household debt hitting the roof and punching holes.

It's a circus but its unreal. Where's the real Circus?

Anyway, you could just do some form of fasting this Ramadan - try dieting. And surely the Lord is forgiving and merciful.

Sea of Green | But not Scorpene Submarines

Like most things in Malaysia, as with the ignoble Twin Towers, Parliament is a show joint. Bung Mukhtar, that Sabah MP, was one of them who started it all, under the slitty eyes of the Speaker from Sabah, a Panglima or Pendikar something with a broken Kris.

It's quite amusing. Mohd Aziz MP had made a call, loud and clear, for Bersih leader to be hanged for treason - all for commiting the act of wanting free and fair elections. You could guess what happened or will happen next.

Parliament is broken and in a mess ... about time we have a General Election ... and soon. But for Goodness sake, not during Haj season lah!

But Hell, it might just come...sooner than later!

# If you like Hangman ...you could try this ..www.hangman.no

PS: Not all submarines are bad. How about this one?

Thots of the Day | still down in depravity

Actually we should be be able to co-exist with tyrants. PM Najib says the Minority is terrorizing the Majority. But BN is so civilized they sobbed in shivering pathos at the brutalized Police who can't catch criminals now. The Police are such a sorry state that after the brutal knocks their heads are rotated back to front. That makes seeing criminals very difficult.

So they want to sue us for a sit-down protest.

Quite a job for the rakyat to keep PM Najib and cronies body and fat and soul together.

Looks like the rakyat are cobblers after all. Mending soiled soles.

Sarawak GE 13 | Eyeing the Election Candy?

Proposed 1,480 metres span Batang Sadong Bridge at Kampung Buloh, Sarawak

I've been through the area before. Crossing the Batang Sadong to Kota Samarahan, another river to cross took half a day ...that's very unproductive to residents in both Samarahan and Asajaya for their livelihood. In the Asajaya area lie many kampungs, mostly of Malay farmers and fishermen who virtually (mostly unfairly voted and kept Taib and truant son Sulaiman in Parliament for decades.

People in Asajaya and Sadong actually used to have a language or dialect heritage. I hope they still do though it's probably gone, what with that silly botak Rais Yatem conditioning with RTM Radio and TV. I hear little of it now. It's got a heavy "twang" on the nasal/glottal and half nasal sounds as in the word "orang" the "ng" would twang! :) Some studies have been done on this. James Collins has traced localities and local Malay dialests[#].

Once chatted with a Chinese shopkeeper in his late 30's, apparently disenchanted, because he and family gave up farming ...orange orchards and pineapples. On being asked why, they couldn't face some diseases and pests or blight impropoperly or unprofessionaly un addressed.

Those pineapples from Asajaya, Nenas Sarikei, used to be the darling of farming there.

These are simple humble folks whose life used to be the land and the sea. Except for some, others have more or less abandoned traditional farming and gravitated to the bright lights of Kuching, where for the young there aren't bountiful jobs. For those who managed to get to University there are PTPTN loans for both parents and children to shoulder.

Once rode a bike from Serian through Simunjan and saw along the way some swathes of land prepared for oil palm plantations.

But with unethical land distribution, the land is no longer their life sustainer. Most might, though without adequate local studies, have been disenfranchised.

They could well build that bridge joining Asajaya and Kota Samarahan. With losses throught corrupt practices just about a lot of other things could be improved. If they won't build that bridge for Asajaya, people might gravitate to Serian where market for agricultural products for smallholders is restricted compared to Kuching.

Election candy

Just another paper project ?

There is of course an alternative consideration. This much talked about bridge may again not reach fruition.

It may well turn out to be yet another of those projects where a tranche of public money gets handed out to well-connected persons and where promises are made just before elections, for the whole matter to suddenly fizzle out the moment the election is over!

A point in case is those roads that were ‘about to be started’ just before the State election just last year. The moment the election was over the machinery disappeared, along with the money that the local BN YBs had promised their voters had been allocated to the projects.

And readers have just sent a reminder from Sibu, where we recently queried yet another of Najib’s phantom pre-election promises, the so-called University of Technology. We have shown that plans have progressed no further than a request being made and no money has been put aside.

Yet, it was nevertheless indicated last month that construction would begin at the start of June.

Of course, at that time politicians all believed that the election would be called in June. But, Najib has again lost his nerve and postponed the election.

The projected site for the Sibu Technology University Campus. Not a sign of activity there now the election has been again postponed!

So, no surprise that our Sibu observers have reported that, as we approach the end of June, not a spadeful of soil has been turned on the supposed site for the Sibu University Campus!

Descent into depravity | Chin Huat "kebas" balik !

It's unspeakable.

Things gone bonkers for BN politics. First Rais Yatem couldn't tell between 20,000.00 and 200,000.00 Bersih protestors. Now this puny little man Kayveas says Bersih supporters WERE PAID to walk that April Day. He's gone off his rockers. Those butt rockers in front of Ambiga's house and disturbing the neighborhood were! RM50 each they said.

And now a Bersih 3.0 point-man Wong Chin Huat, with flames tied to his ears demanded an apology from Kayveas! With the blanket of dusts in hazy sky above you, wouldn't you be hot! Maybe the dusts clogged Kayveas' brains! Maybe not. He could have spoken from his butt!
