How to end a year, ahh?

It could be the same as how to begin a new one.

So we were thrown out of Heaven, and we said goodbye to the virgins and then we decided to rough it out. And up till now, we still can go to bed and wake up in the morning, all of the past 51 weeks. Well, there could have been a couple of bad hangovers of whatever causes.

Perhaps, someone else could put it better in some 3,000 words, some of which are:

"... [......]Adam is about to throw himself off a cliff in despair, when he glimpses redemption. First Eve draws near to tell him that she is to have a child. Then God comes and gently tells Adam that he is wrong to try to reckon his accomplishments on a cosmic scale.

“For if you saw your transient, earthly life set in dimensions of eternity, there wouldn’t be any virtue in endurance. Or if you saw your spirit drench the dust, where could you find incentive for your efforts?”

All God asks of man is to strive for progress, nothing more.

“It is human virtues I want,” He says, “human greatness.”

......people [...](could) reject the false choice between Utopia and degeneracy. Moral progress, [...] is neither guaranteed nor is it hopeless. Instead, it is up to us. ..." - The Economist Newspaper

Lost jet engines and PR Registration

We, the Malaysian public, just discovered we lost a [two?] jet engine [s] on an F 5E TII fighter plane in late 2007 and PM Najib said it was not a cover-up, after some 24 months. And it was on his immediate watch as the Defence Minister of Malaysia.

Then on December 20, 2009, Hadi Awang of PAS had stated,

"We are not in a hurry to register Pakatan (Rakyat). Pakatan does not necessarily have to become a single party. What is important is for us to bring out what we have in common, and to put off things which we do not agree on.”

Earlier we were told that Pakatan Rakyat had submitted its registration on November 3, 2009. Then, Zaid Ibrahim had stated,

"The people will see that this group is no different from Umno and Barisan Nasional leaders."

This is all confusing, so the de factor leader of PKR and possible leader of Pakatan Rakyat, Anwar Ibrahim chipped in today December 21, 2009,

“So I think there’s no problem with that, because as far as we are concerned, we are committed to register.”

Well, maybe there will be or there will not be any registration because Anwar Ibrahim explains,

“What Hadi has said is that because whenever we try to hasten it (the registering process) the RoS will slow it down.”

Meanwhile, in Kuching Sarawak, life is not sweet. There is no white granulated sugar. The shop we frequented has come up with a noble solution - he's selling brown sugar!

And he readily offered plenty of sweets!

Bukit Gasing : Stop spinning! Restore self and local government !

Bukit Gasing residents can challenge mayor's order

PUTRAJAYA: Kuala Lumpur City Hall and a developer today failed to prevent 108 Bukit Gasing residents from challenging a development order by the Kuala Lumpur mayor pertaining to a hillside development project in the area.

Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Paduka Zaleha Zahari and Datuk Mohd Hishamudin Mohd Yunus dismissed KL City Hall's appeal in a two-to-one majority decision, with Justice KN Segara dissenting.

In an oral decision, Justice Zaleha said after going through the submissions of both parties, the applicant's appeal was dismissed.

KL City Hall and the developer, Gasing Meridian Sdn Bhd (GMSB), are appealing against the High Court decision on April 24, in granting leave for a judicial review to the residents to quash the mayor's order.

GMSB is the developer involved in the development of Sanctuary Ridge Kuala Lumpur City — a project to build 68 bungalows on a 15.5ha site in Bukit Gasing.

Counsels R Sivarasa and Derek Fernandez, appearing for the residents, told the media that the residents should have the right to voice their opinion as there might be landslides affecting the lives and property of those staying near the hill.

Fernandez said the hearing date for the judicial review had yet to be fixed by the High Court due to the appeal.

Romesh Abraham acted for KL City Hall and Datuk R R Sethu for GMSB.

The Kuala Lumpur mayor, in an order dated Oct 2, 2008 issued to GMSB, allowed the developer to carry out earth works and sub-divisions in the area.

In their application for leave, the residents named the KL City Hall and GMSB as defendants.

The residents claimed that the mayor had failed to take into account that they had a right under common law to be given due notice, and be given a chance to voice their opinions in the decision-making process of planning.

They said that the mayor had acted contrary to the policy and intent of the Federal Territory (Planning) Act 1982. - The Edge Malaysia

Missing | What do you miss in Malaysia?

I lifted this off from an email, written by a British to a Malaysian. It's apt. We're missing Sarawak bumiputera children in local Universities now. The fault? Their mothers are not bumiputeras!

A Malaysian's Missing Sayings

Get Vietnamese workers, dogs missing.
Get Bangladeshi workers, Malay girls missing.
Get Indonesian workers, money missing.
Get Indian workers, jewellery missing.
Get Chinese workers, husbands missing.

And now ..

Call the police, the evidence goes missing,
Call the lawyers, the judge goes missing,
Call the ministry of transport, the reports go missing
Change the government, funds go missing,
Say something and you may be missing.

What else are you missing? Of course I miss something. Don't you?

Blogger to be questioned by Police

Bernard Khoo, who blogs on "zorro-unmasked" will have a date with the Police in KL at 3.00pm tomorrow at the Police Department behind Bank Negara.

His blog "zorro-unmasked" is believed by the Police to have unnerved them. It's unclear why. Voiceforous as he may be, there seems to be nothing untoward, as far as the laws go.

Let's hope everything goes fine with him whilst in the good and able company of Harris Ibrahim of People's Parliament.

Stay cool, Zolo! You'll need plenty of your coolness!

Dr Death on Beng Hock | It's Murder She Says

Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan, Thai Forensic Expert

Teoh's death could well be homicide, says pathologist

Thu, Oct 22, 2009
New Straits Times
By Rita Jong

SHAH ALAM: Political aide Teoh Beng Hock's death was likely to be a case of homicide based on some of the injuries he sustained, a forensic pathologist from Thailand told the coroner's court yesterday.

Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan testified that Teoh could have been tortured before he fell to his death, based on the injuries he sustained.

The forensic pathologist said her investigations revealed that Teoh could have had a foreign object forced into his anus, and had been strangled and beaten with a piece of wood before he died.

These findings, she told the coroner's court, were based on the autopsy report, the X-rays and photographs which were sent to her.

She further testified that after studying those items, she reached the conclusion that Teoh's death was 80 per cent homicide and 20 per cent suicide.

Dr Pornthip testified at the request of the Selangor government.

"Based on the photographs of the wound at the anal region, it looked as if an object was inserted," she said when questioned by counsel Malik Imtiaz Sarwar who is representing the Selangor state government.

"If there was bone penetration through the anus as a result of the fall, the wound would be in the opposite direction.

(In an earlier hearing, pathologist Dr Prashant Naresh Samberkar testified that the injury at the anal region could have been caused by a bone penetration.)

Dr Pornthip said there were pre-fall injuries to the body at the back of his right thigh, a fracture to the skull and bruises on his neck.

"I have never seen injuries such as these in a victim who had fallen from a high place," she said.

"There were also abrasions at the back of his right thigh which looked like a wound caused by beating with a piece of wood. There is a possibility that Teoh was tortured before he died."

Dr Pornthip said to determine if there was torture, she would need to open his posterior area to see if there was haemorrhaging under the skin.

"This was not done (by pathologists here who conducted the post-mortem) based on the autopsy report," she said.

"If there was bleeding, then the injury would not be compatible from a fall from height with a single impact."

Dr Pornthip then touched on the abrasion just below the chin which she said was consistent with manual strangulation.

On the fracture to the skull, the pathologist said she was of the view that it was caused by blunt force trauma directly on the skull.

She added that it was possible that this injury was sustained from the fall, but only as a result of a secondary impact when the body landed.

Dr Pornthip also said due to the absence of guarding wounds (injuries sustained when trying to break a fall), Teoh was believed to have been unconscious when he fell.

When questioned by Deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais, who is representing the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, she admitted that her findings were based on a less than perfect picture resolution which were scanned and sent to her to be examined.

Meanwhile, when questioned by counsel Tan Hock Chuan, who was appointed by the Attorney-General's Chambers to assist in the inquest, she said she was not supplied with all the reports (the toxicology or some of the DNA reports) or photographs.

Tan: Since you didn't inspect the body or conduct the post-mortem, nor did you go to the scene of the incident, I suggest that it is inappropriate for you to form an opinion in mathematical terms (80 per cent homicide and 20 per cent suicide).

Dr Pornthip: I disagree. In my line of work, I care for the right of the dead and to find out what happened. In this case, I did not know this was a political issue. I do not take sides. I am just here to tell you what my findings were. I need to do a second post-mortem (for a more conclusive finding).

Tan: Who told you this was a political issue?

Dr Pornthip: The Thai ambassador. I never wanted to attend court but I was invited to do this. You have to understand my limitations (of not having the opportunity to conduct the post-mortem).

(Teoh's post-mortem was conducted by pathologists Dr Khairul Azman Ibrahim and Dr Prashant).

She said that she was not criticising the doctors' findings but her findings were based on her work and experience.

"My findings were only based on the relevant documents which were supplied to me.

"I would be able to come up with a conclusive finding if I am given a chance to conduct a second post-mortem," she said.

The inquest proceedings before coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas continues on Nov 9. -New Straits Times

Rural poverty: life in sanctuary?

One of the reasons for the plight of the bird, the Sarawak hornbill, is the loss of thick foliage and tall trees. As it faces extinction, laws and ordinances have been created to protect the affected wildlife. The laws effected determine the preservation and assign wild life to designated areas and preserve them there for survival.

What about rural people in Sarawak or elsewhere in Malaysia? Will they be consigned to preservation as the hornbill and the orangutan?

In the recent Bagan Pinang By Election, you cannot help but be reminded of the plight of rural people.

The Sarawak Head Hunter noted that some of the ways they won Bagan Pinang was giving out groceries like these. That's what Wanita UMNO said. That's well known in most places in Sarawak, too. To urban citizens that's very demeaning but to rural folks, perhaps, it couldn't make things any better or worse.

Which could very well explain some of the less well known reasons for BN's win in Bagan Pinang. Looking at the terrible numbers there, even traditional supporters of PAS ran away. The phenomenon might well mean a kind of hopelessness amongst many rural voters - a win or a loss in Bagan Pinang would not matter. The political stranglehold the ruling parties have lacks consructive meaningful change to them. In any case, in Negeri Sembillan, the ruling party would still be BN - Bagan Pinang won't bring ripples.

But we won't know for sure that they'll not vote for change at the right time, as in a General Election for State or the nation. Surely, poverty is not a sanctuary?

PAS must have known pretty well they could not have won the seat. They did say that, though not in too many words. There might be, too, other seats which will not be really worth fighting for, in a pragmatic sense. The effort would be to highlight the wrongs that must be put right. Which makes lots of sense. If PR wins every seat, that won't be too good for their health, or anyone else's!

On the heels of the formation of Makkal Sakti Party, other new political parties might sprout. Already, there have been rumours in Sarawak. Gabriel Adit was said to form an new party, the Pakatan Rakyat Malaysia. Following that, another is in the offing for Angkatan Anggota Rakyat Bumiputra Sarawak. That abbreviates as "ARABS". Unlike PRM, ARABS is said to be UMNO's doing. It's being promoted by an former bank clerk, Afendi Jeman.

No new party has succeeded in forming in Sarawak. If these manage to beat the odds, they might not be too odd! ROS Sarawak Branch will now be very busy again as even the SUPP needs their help with the disputed Dudong branch in Sibu.

One thing is sure. It looks like the ROS is very busy picking at their laws just so ultimately the people they are meant to protect, stay safe and preserved.

In some thick forests and hills of Sarawak, the hornbills and orangutans will be huddled amongst the foliage, safe in the sanctuary of the laws we made for them. Plus the peanuts, visitors throw to them.

Bagan Pinang | PAS lost

Not that the BN wins but that PAS lost.

The results and the detailed figures say it all. The PAS Election machine did not read sense. Above all, the voters said it and PAS didn't hear it before the campaigns. Perhaps, the PKR member who quit was right but he was not so right as he failed to make whatever the case was. So it's down to elections and winning and hearing.

Someone reminded me, the good Prophet did say that to talk more, you must have had listened plenty!

The Bagang Pinang voters have said their piece, with or without cues from the SPR or the Police or the Military. You just have to accept that.

Now let's see if UMNO 9Negeri can handle success!

The detailed results speak loud.

MCA | Democracy works?

Say what you like about MCA's position in the BN or the nation, democracy seems to work. They've demonstrated what it means to resolve internal party disputes and they may be able to move on.

Will they move on and help make meaningful contribution to the process of democracy in Malaysia? If the same situation has occurred in UMNO, the Malaysian Navy left with only only 2 support ships would have been involved!!!

BN has resorted to extremely unethical campaign tactics, harping on Najib's old picture visiting Nik Aziz, PAS Spiritual Leader, when he was hospitalized early in the year. Is Najib praying for the leader's speedy departure? One Mongolian girl had disappeared mysteriously, her remains found, literally in pieces , killed by a C4 explosive from the Malaysian military.

"I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear, I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations. To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize, men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women and all Americans want to build, a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. Now, these challenges can't be met by any one leader or any one nation. And that's why my administration's worked to establish a new era of engagement in which all nations must take responsibility for the world we seek."

It's very noble for Malaysian politicians to serve their country in government, whether its for ruling party or in opposition. We can't go on having these by elections. It's almost monthly. The real business of government is like a sideshow now!

One of the criteria SPRM should really consider for the contesting candidates must surely be proof of good health!

As it is now, we should have had a General Elections yesterday!

For the malicious act of taking down the opposition banners and posters, the Chairman of the Election Commission should have the decency to resign when he didn't know how the ROS laws should operate!

Bagan Pinang | Cross counter Cross

The intense campaigning by both BN and PR now witnesses last minute rush to sway voters to either side. The Malaysian Insider reports UMNO has gained dozens of PKR members in Teluk Kemang. PKR on the hand has enticed hundreds of UMNO members. No firm information is apparent in the jumble. Polling is on Sunday 11.

Meanwhile any good forecast is futile in the race to the last day. It could possibly be the last impression on the way to the polling booths that might determine their choice.

While the election battle heated up, some friends out in Seremban today appear to be have been engrossed at the sight of a crocodile in the midst of calmness and serenity at the Lake Garden. While back at Teluk Kemang it sounded like a smackdown.

Update

Malaysiakini has some numbers on the cross-overs:
"...He [Anwar Ibrahim] is also expected to receive 300 forms from former Umno and Gerakan members who want to join PKR.

Meanwhile, Umno and Barisan Nasional candidate Isa Samad received 125 forms from former PKR members to join Umno.

This included former PKR committee member Shahruddin Abdul Hamid, who initially wanted to contest in Bagan Pinang as an independent candidate. ..."

Bagan Pinang | Bias, incompetent and malicious SPRM

"The condition does not apply to political parties as they enjoy a national status. Only state-level organisation aspiring to become a national entity needs to have seven members from the states."
- Datuk Md Alias Kalil, Registrar of Societies (ROS) Director-General [Bernama]

The Chairman of Malaysian Election Commission (Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya Malaysia) on 6th October ordered Police to take down posters and banners of opposition parties of the Pakatan Rakyat, PKR and DAP, as acording to him such acts were illegal as the Pakatan was not registered as a Coalition under the Registrar of Socities Act.

ROS on the other hand came out with a different interpretation of the Law and says this does not apply to political parties.

On the 6th October, Tan Sri Dato Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof rubbished PR's protest on his actions sending his officers and Policemen and taking down all the posters. These materials cost a lot of money which, unlike the BN, came from the donations of members and supporters nationwide. The BN, despite having huge unknown resources didn't even pay up their campaign materials used in previous elections.

This so-called Chairman of SPRM is a rogue public servant and should answer in a court of law his dumb actions and malicious acts against the opposition.

I would sue and labor for costs and expenses, the annulment of the election result and the dismissal of the bugger. He should rot in jail!

This ship cost RM43.0m, second hand, and it cost another RM54.4m to refit. It was built in 1970, used by the US Navy and bought by Malaysia in 1994.

It just got burnt today. Fires occured in the Office and Stores.

We'll be down to 2 instead of 3 support ships. The other 2 are KD Sri Inderasakti and KD Mahawangsa. The Military will now have to place a new order for another ship. France again?

So how is the Bagan Pinang postal voting today? Any news and will they be good news for some?

Middle East Nuclear issue| No one is dancing, yet...

ElBaradei says nuclear Israel number one threat to Mideast: report

TEHRAN, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei said Sunday that "Israel is number one threat to Middle East" with its nuclear arms, the official IRNA news agency reported.

At a joint press conference with Iran's Atomic Energy Organization chief Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran, ElBaradei brought Israel under spotlight and said that the Tel Aviv regime has refused to allow inspections into its nuclear installations for 30years, the report said.

"Israel is the number one threat to the Middle East given the nuclear arms it possesses," ElBaradei was quoted as saying.

Israel is widely assumed to have nuclear capabilities, although it refuses to confirm or deny the allegation.

"This (possession of nuclear arms) was the cause for some proper measures to gain access to its (Israel's) power plants ... and the U.S. president has done some positive measures for the inspections to happen," said ElBaradei.

ElBaradei arrived in Iran Saturday for talks with Iranian officials over Tehran's nuclear program.

Leaders of the United States, France and Britain have condemned Iran's alleged deception to the international community involving covert activities in its new underground nuclear site.

Post Raya blues

Raya in the kampungs stretch up to a whole month. It's those moments when you just have to meet relatives or very dear friends. Not all will have this luxury now. You have school fees and groceries to keep up with. And, despite what Bank Negara says, prices are rising. Dr M complained salaries and wages are low in Malaysia. That's what I like about the Old Man. He can't say no to the return of workers unions. Even our Policemen need a union to bargain for reasonable salaries. Here's my friend's experience of an encounter with the traffic Policeman who might have a dose of post Raya blues.

This morning, driving back to PJ from home I was stopped for speeding.
Here's what happened..

Me: (wound down car window, and got ready driving license)

Police: (approaches my car) Boss! (gave me a big smile - must be anticipating a big fish here, ready to slaughter!)

Me: Saya ini bukan boss lah! (smile)

Police: Awak ada bawa laju ini?

Me: Huh? Tak tahu? Saya jalan 110 saja... Berapa laju?

Police: 24km dari sini, di Tapah awak bawa 115.. macam mana?

Me: Sudah salah, saman lah (smile)

Police: Boleh bayar saman? RM300 untuk speeding..

Me: Bayar lah, ini kereta company, saya bayar sendiri lah.. (smile)

Police: Tak boleh belanja minum ke? (smile)

Me: Tak boleh.. (smile and shook head)

Police: Belanja sikit minum..

Me: Tak boleh (smile and shook head)

Police: Ok, saya lepaskan awak.. (returned my driving license)

Me: Terima kasih, encik (big smile)

I always refused to bribe my way out of being issued an traffic offense summon, and most time I am let off (exception of one time I had to pay a RM100 fine, which was discounted to RM50).
